Kresge Family Cemeteries

Monroe County, Pennsylvania

This page will feature information on Kresge family burials in Monroe County, Pennsylvania. The presentation format will follow other cemeteries I have documented. Names will be provided in alphabetical order and most will be hyperlinks that will take you to a high quality digital photograph of the individualís grave marker. Most of the photographs were taken between 2003 to 2009. We begin our survey with the two most obvious choices for the family, the Salem Church cemetery in, Gilbert, and the cemetery in Effort. I will be adding other family cemeteries at a later date.

The family cemetery databases listed so far include:

Salem Church Cemetery, Gilbert

Effort Cemetery, Effort

Brodheadsville Cemetery (old), Brodheadsville

Buena Vista (Zion), Brodheadsville

Appenzell (New), Appenzell

Appenzell (Old), Appenzell

Please note that these surveys are not comprehensive and do not include all family members actually interred, only the ones I have photographed over the years.

Salem Church & Cemetery, Gilbert, Monroe County, Pennsylvania

Above: view of the old Salem Church & cemetery. This was the second church here and was built in 1872.

"History of Wayne, Pike and Monroe Counties, Pennsylvania," Alfred Mathers, R.T. Peck & Co., Philadelphia, 1886, pages 1221-1222.

The Salem Church is a union church, the buildings and lands of the church being owned in equal right by Reformed and Lutheran congregations. The organization of this church antedates the recollection of the oldest members, and a complete chronology of the same cannot be found. The first church was built in 1805. The building committee consisted of Henry Everitt, Philip Kresge (Reformed), George Kunkle and John Serfass (Lutheran). The builders were Frederick Case and his three sons - Conrad, John and Charles. A second church was built in 1872, at the cost of ten thousand dollars.

The pastors regularly serving the Reformed congregation from its origin to the present time are as follows: Eilenmoyer, Boomp, Hofenditz, Decker, Becker, Daniels, Huber and Smith. The Lutheran pastors for the same time have been Faundterslot, Mensing, Gross, Heilig, Smalsey, Grow, Yeager, Struntz, Weber and Strauss.

The cemetery belonging to this church is located across the street and contains about one acre. The oldest tombstone bears this inscription -

"In Memory of Jacob Esh,
Died April 11, 1808.
"Aged 30 Years."

Note: After years of disuse and neglect the Salem church was sold to a couple who had the building dismantled and shipped to Napa, California
where it was reassembled and turned into a home. It remains there today.

Below: front and rear view of the Kresge Monument in the Gilbert Cemetery.
There are eight plaques affixed to the front base of the monument that provide translations for the eight grave markers located at the rear of the monument.

For photographs of the eight individual plaques, please visit the Kresge Family Monument page.

Aka: Hillside Memorial Cemetery, St. John's Church, Green Lawn & Merwinsburg. Located north of the village of Effort and south of the old village of Merwinsburg, just to the west of Route 115. The cemetery is on the left side of the road across from the church. St. John's church was erected in 1872 as a Union church by Reformed and Lutheran congregations. Appenzell (Old) Cemetery, Appenzell, Monroe County, Pennsylvania

St. Mark's Church. Some time previous to 1860 divine worship was held in private houses in the vicinity of Brodheadsville. In that year S.D. Brodhead was instrumental in raising, by subscription sixteen hundred dollars towards the building of the church. Encouraged by this success, a congregation was organized and C.D. Brodhead, Harrison Snyder and Rudolph Weiss were selected as building committee. The ground upon which the church stands was donated for that purpose by Randolph Weiss. The building was finished and dedicated in 1862. The cost of building was about twenty-five thousand dollars.
