Keokee Chapel United Methodist Church is located about 700 yards due west of the intersection of Rts. 940 and 191 at Paradise Valley and about 300 yards south of Rt. 940.
This page features cemetery inscriptions from Keokee Chapel Church cemetery, Paradise Valley, Monroe county, Pa. Most of the survey was completed in 1982 by genealogist Dale Berger. Burials for Boorem and aligned family members have been separated from Dale’s main listing and are presented first. I have recorded these inscriptions in their entirety, and have included a photograph for each grave marker and/or plot. Here the inscriptions are contemporary, having been recorded in July of 2003.The church was founded in 1838 as a new Evangelical church that today is known as Keokee Chapel. At first its members met at the homes of parishioners, but in 1852 a sanctuary was finally erected on land donated by George Dornblazer, an important figure in the early settlement of the valley. Many families in the valley, including the Boorem and Nauman families, became members of this new church, which eventually replaced the original Evangelical Lutheran church founded in 1825. Joseph Boorem, his brother-in-law Peter P. Dornblaser, and his uncle Christian Nauman were the first trustees of the new church, and later Francis Boorem (Joseph's younger brother) became a leading figure in the church. All of these individuals graves can be found in the cemetery today.
There are many members of the Boorem family buried here, including third-generation family members Joseph Boorem (mentioned above), and his siblings Jacob Boorem, Elizabeth Boorem, and Francis Boorem. It is likely that John Boorem’s wife Elizabeth Nauman, and her mother Anna Marie Nauman, are buried here as well. The Elizabeth Boorem plot is today marked by a dedication stone in memory of John Boorem, his wife Elizabeth and their son Jacob. Elizabeth was the daughter of Michael and Mary (Anna Marie) Stricker Nauman. The Naumans were neighbors of the Boorems in Nazareth Township, and the two families would also be counted among the early settlers of Paradise Valley. The Nauman family also played an important part in the early development of the new church, and many family members are also buried here. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additions or corrections to this list.
