Parish records indicate that Samuel Hares was baptized at the church in Shipham on 1 May 1763 and was the son of Joseph and Mary Hares. Parish records also show that a Samuel Hares married Fanny Lovell in 1784, and the widowed Samuel Hares later married Susanna Wookey in 1793. Samuel died in 1815 at the age of 53 and was buried in the parish cemetery on 19 November 1815. His widow Susanna appears in the 1841 and 1851 census of Shipham. In the latter return she is described as a "pauper" living with her unmarried daughter Elizabeth.
