Israel Hares was baptized at St. Leonard's, Shipham on 2 March 1800. He was the son of Samuel Hares and his wife Susannah Wookey. On 26 March 1823 Israel married Mary Ann Collins, and the first of their children, daughter Hannah, was born the following year. The family makes their first appearance in the 1841 census of Shipham, where Israel is described as an lead ore miner. In the late 1840s the family moved to Brynmawr, Wales and eventually settled in the nearby community of Nantyglo, where Israel died 25 May 1883.
