In the name of God Amen, I William Lockard of Carroll County, State of Maryland, being of sound and disposing mind do publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following. That is to say,
First and principally, I commit my soul into the hands of Almighty God, and my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executors hereafter named, and after my debts and funeral charges are paid, I devise and bequeath as follows:
I devise and bequeath to my wife Sarah Lockard all my Real Estate during her natural life, provided she retains my name. If not, the Orphan's Court shall determine and set apart her share. It is also my will that she shall receive, during the period of her natural life, the interest annually upon the notes of hand which I now hold against my children, and if this shall not be sufficient for her maintenance and support, she may cut and sell such amount of timber as may be necessary for this purpose. I also will and bequeath to her such articles of household furniture as she may wish to keep.
It is also my will and I hereby direct that all my personal property, except as may be reserved by my wife, shall be sold, and if the amount realized from such sale be not sufficient to pay my debts and funeral charges, I direct my executors hereinafter named, to sell a lot of land which was deeded to me by B. James Buchanan and George G. Belt (?) and the amount which may remain from the sale of this land, together with my personal property after my debts shall have been paid, I direct shall be safely invested by my executors, and the interest paid by them to my wife Sarah Lockard during her natural life.
After the death of my wife Sarah Lockard, or in the case that she should not retain my name as aforementioned. I will and direct that all my real estate shall be sold, and in the case of her marriage after the Orphan's Court shall have set off her share the remainder ???? ???? in case of her death, the whole of the proceeds of such sale shall be divided share and share alike between my children as follows. John Lockard, the children of my son Jeremiah Lockard shall receive his share, the children of Sarah Jane Taylor, my daughter, shall receive her share, Jesse Lockard, Jacob Lockard, Elizabeth Tawney, the children of my daughter Sarah Fowler, shall receive her share, Wm H. Lockard and Catherine Hook. All notes of hand and book accounts which are due from my children which are out of date and could not be recovered by process of law, shall be held against them ????? in the final settlement as that much of his or her distributed (?) share. The interest on the notes I hold against James W. Hook shall be paid to my wife Sarah Lockard during her natural life, unless the note be sooner paid.
It is also my will that my son William H. Lockard who is now afflicted, shall have a sufficient amount of wood from off my land for the use of his house until my real estate is sold or his health shall be restored.
I also will and direct that the burying ground on my place containing one half acre of land shall be held and reserved forever for the purposes of burial of the family and its connections and such others as may desire burial there.
And lastly, I do hereby constitute and appoint my two sons Jacob Lockard and John Lockard to be the sole executors of this my last will and testament, revoking and annulling all former wills by me heretofore, and ratifying and confirming this and none other to by my last will and testament.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this thirteenth day of May in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and seventy eight.

Signed, sealed, published and declared by William Lockard the above named testator, as and for his last will and testament, in the presence of us who at his request and in his presence and in the presence of each other, have subscribed our names as witnesses thereto.

Note: William Lockard, his 1st wife Hannah and his and 2nd wife Sarah, his father and mother John and Elizabeth Lockard, and at least one of his children, Catherine Hook, are buried at St. John's Catholic cemetery in Westminster, not in the family burying ground mentioned above.
